Stop Ghosting, Start Talking

The public sector construction world can feel like a bit of a circus sometimes. Contractors chasing bids, suppliers pitching solutions, consultants juggling a dozen projects at once… and somewhere along the line, communication falls by the wayside. Cue ghosting.
Yes, ghosting. You send an email, make a call, or drop a message and… crickets. Nothing. Silence. It’s frustrating and inefficient. Ghosting wastes time, creates confusion, and makes everyone’s life harder. Teams scramble, resources get misaligned, and before you know it, trust has left the building.

Ghosting isn’t a one-way street. It goes both ways. BDMs shouldn’t vanish after initial conversations, and potential leads shouldn’t leave people hanging either. Everyone involved in a project, whether chasing or offering opportunities, has a responsibility to communicate clearly, acknowledge messages, and keep the conversation moving. Even a two-minute update makes a huge difference.

We get it, everyone’s busy. But taking a moment to respond, even if it’s just to say “sorry, we’re going in a different direction,” prevents wasted effort and builds trust. Even when the conversation feels awkward or the news isn’t what someone wants to hear, communication is always better than silence.

The public sector is built on relationships and reputations that last for years. Clear, honest updates help contractors plan better, teams allocate resources wisely, and everyone avoids last-minute stress.

From a business development perspective, these habits are gold. Early engagement, consistent communication, and a dash of charm make you memorable. Everyone notices who’s reliable, who makes the process painless, and who isn’t going to disappear into the ether for weeks.
So, here’s a simple tip: don’t ghost. Respond, communicate, and keep everyone in the loop. Common courtesy is the secret ingredient to building trust, smoothing processes, and actually winning work in every industry. Remember, communication is always key!
